A novel hybrid catalytic membrane consisted of cation ion-exchange resin particles and polyether-sulfone was prepared by immersion phase inversion and used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the esterification of acidified oil with methanol. The hybrid catalytic membranes with different porosities were obtained by control of N-Methyl-2-Pyrolidone (NMP) concentration in NMP/water coagulation bath. According to this study, the porosity increased with a decrease in the concentration of the NMP in the NMP/water coagulation bath. The free fatty acid conversion increased with an increase in the porosity of the hybrid membrane. It implies that the membrane with higher porosity could provide a larger contact area for the reaction so as to accelerate the reaction. The free fatty acid conversion reached 95.8percent under the optimal conditions of methanol/acidified oil mass ratio 2.5:1, percent of resin loading to acidified oil 12.5 wt(percent), temperature 65 deg C and reaction time 8 h.
