Bacteria have been described as "living paint" because they cover nearly every imaginable surface and exist in the interiors of many living and nonliving things. Most are less than one micron (0.00004 inch) in their largest dimension, so the period at the end of this sentence could easily accommodate 150,000 typical bacteria nestled side-by-side. A few of the thousands of types of bacteria are bad actors, causing human health problems ranging from anthrax to tooth decay. The rest of them are harmless or even beneficial. For example, the digestive tract of a typical person is home to more than 400 strains of bacteria. Concentrations there can reach one trillion per gram (454 trillion per pound) of food being processed.
