EFFECT OF SOYBEAN MEAL BASED DSETS ON THE GROWTH AND SURVIVAL RATE OF THE INDIAN IVIAJOR CARP, CIRRHINUS MRIGALA (HAM.)

The effect of varying levels of defatted soybean meal based diets on the growth and survival of mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton) was investigated. In a feeding trial of 90 days, four experimental diets containing soybean meal at 20%, 30% and 40% of incorporation were fed to quadruplicate groups of 10 fishes. A mixture of groundnut oilcake and rice bran in 1:1 ratio served as the control. Best growth in terms of percentage length gain, percentage weight gain and percentage SGR and FCR were obtained in the test diet (27.9% crude protein) with 20% r ybean meal inclusion level while PER and survival rate were highest at 40% inclusion level. Variations in dietary protein and soybean meal levels were not reflected in the proximate composition of the fish muscle. The amino acid profile of the test diets was determined and its significance has been discussed.
