New particle formation observed during the saturn experiment at inversion layers -a case study

In the recent literature,there is a lot of discussion regarding the influences of meteorological processes on new particle formation in the lower atmosphere.Indeed,most experiments dealing with this topic are ground-based and,therefore,not suitable to investigate these processes at the location where they are assumed to take place.During the SATURN experiment a tethered-bailoon was used to perform measurements of particle number concentrations N in addition to meteorological parameters in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) up to a height of 1200 m.In contrast to Stratmann et al.(2003) who describes new particle formation events during SATURN on the mesoscale range,this paper focuses on measurements of small particles observed at shallow temperature inversions which seems to be a very local phenomena.
