As adoption arid implementation of electronic health records (EHRs) and personal health records (PHRs) continues to grow, so does the need for a skilled work force to facilitate the transition, implementation, and management of these health information systems. There has never been a more critical need for qualified health information professionals.However, federal support for an expanded work force, in the form of the "10,000 Trained by 2010 Act" (HR 1467), has stalled (see page 20). In light of this, more and more communities are taking it upon themselves to address the shortage of HIM and healthcare staff.
