Beekeeping Practices Old, New and 'Get Away Wie Ye!'

The Varroa mite has caused a fundamental rethink for many beekeepers of the pre Varroa generation, in Scotland anyway. The new generation of beekeepers who have never had the pleasure of working with bees prior to Varroa just accept the mite as the norm and get on with the job. In the halcyon days Swarm Prevention was the prime mover in good beekeeping husbandry, unlike our counterparts South of the Border, who had a much higher incidence of disease due to a higher stocking density of colonies with which to contend. The incidence of disease among Scotland's colonies was and still is relatively low compared to England. However, Varroa changed all that!
