Report clarifies scientists' understanding of association between diabetes and cancer.

DOES DIABETES MAKE AN INDI-vidual more or less susceptible to certain cancers? Conversely, are those with cancer more or less susceptible to diabetes? For the most part, the answers to these questions remain unknown, although there appears to be some association between the 2 diseases.To further the discussion, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) put together an expert writing group that issued a consensus report on June 21. The report suggests some association between diabetes and cancer incidence and prognosis, describes risk factors and mediating solutions common to both diseases, explores possible biological links, and discusses treatments for diabetes that may affect cancer risk and prognosis (Giovannucci E et al. CA Cancer] Clin. 2010;60[4]207-221).
