Specifically, patients should be told the size, location, and fragment material, as well as how the fragment might cause injury. For instance, some fragments may be made of materials that are not designed for long-term use in the body and may cause an adverse reaction. In other instances, a fragment may migrate and block a blood vessel or puncture an organ. Patients who retain unsecured metallic fragments should be advised to avoid magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); the MRFs magnetic field may cause metallic pieces to migrate and its radiofrequency fields can cause the metal to heat and damage internal tissue.
