At the TMS 2008 Annual Meeting this month, a panel of invited speakers will discuss the role of engineers in the 21st century. The presentations, coorganized by Diran Apelian of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and 2007 TMS vice president and Iver Anderson of Iowa State University and TMS Public and Governmental Affairs Committee chair, will comprise the keynote session of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The presenters include Apelian; John Moavenzadeh of the World Economic Forum; David Spencer of WTE Corporation, Bedford, Massachusetts; Abdul Jaleel Al-Khalifa of Saudi Ar-amco, Dharan, Saudi Arabia; Tomas Diaz de la Rubia of Lawrence Liver-more National Laboratory, Livermore, California; and Arthur Coury of Gen-zyme Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts. In February, the participants shared with JOM their ideas on the role of engineers in solving 21st century problems. This second installment focuses on engineering education and professional development issues.
