According to blast furnace steelmakers, April-June quarter domestic demand for pipe pilings is expected to remain unchanged from the year-ago period at 120,000 tons. Demand for steel sheet piles is also forecast to stay flat at 70,000-80,000 tons.For fiscal 2001, demand for steel sheet piles is expected to total 450,000-460,000 tons and pipe pilings to come to 570,000-580,000 tons. Volume of steel sheet piles is likely to drop 5-10 percent from the year before, while pipe pilings is expected to remain unchanged.With the central and local governments facing fiscal difficulties, demand will stay on a declining trend this year as spending on public works will be cut back and projects are being subjected to a second look.
