Towards the end of last year, Deloitte released its Tracking the Trends 2022,which suggests the top ten trends mining companies may face this year. Among the trends that were identified, some common themes emerged. A shortage of talent in the industry will help to push up the cost of doing business and make pushing through new capital projects more difficult. This can be partly addressed by increasing the use of technology, particularly automation, e.g. driverless trucks, remote operations centres and autonomous haulage systems. However, technology is no panacea and mining companies will still have to find ways of attracting more skilled works to the industry.Meanwhile, Government intervention in the industry will continue both in terms of attempts to capture a portion of mining companies profits (e.g. Australia's Minerals Resource Rent Tax) and tougher regulations, such as Australia's new carbon emissions trading scheme, the UK Bribery Act 2012 and the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. As regulatory mandates tighten and public awareness of the industry grows, mining companies will need to recognise the business imperative of embracing high levels of corporate and social responsibility, including health and safety, the environment, business ethics, and labour and community relations.
