Duke Energy is constructing a large-scale, 618 MW coal gasification plant on 220 acres of land along the White River in Edwardsport, Indiana. The company is building the plant adjacent to Edwardsport generating plant, a 160 MW pulverised coal plant with units built between 1944 and 1951. As the new plant nears completion, the existing units will be retired. The project is technologically important not only for Indiana, but also for the nation. Once completed, the Edwardsport plant will be one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in the world. The plant uses advanced technology to gasify coal, strip out pollutants, and then burn that cleaner gas to produce electricity. The new facility will produce nearly 10 times as much power as the existing plant at Edwardsport, with dramatically less environmental impact, including more than 40% less CO_2 emissionset-MWh.
