Because of the specific deposit conditions in the German coal industry (large working depth, multiple-seam extraction, heavy stressed rock mass and the deployment of almost every conceivable type of support system), a very accurate implementation of all influencing factors is indispensable for the application of numerical modelling as a rock mechanical planning tool. This requirement results in a system with the following features: Coupling of large-scale and small-scale models in order to determine and transfer the realistic stress conditions that apply in multiple-seam mining operations for the purpose of detailed analysis. Reproduction of the entire deformation spectrum, from small elastic deformation phenomena to large fracture deformations. Description of all the different ways in which inseam roadways can be used: drivages, single-use and double-use mining exposure. High-accuracy simulation of support elements based on test bench results from installed support systems. Application of combined support systems.
