Six different versions of Alloy 380 have been registered, and their chemical composition ranges are listed in Table 1. The main differences between the six versions involve the magnesium and zinc composition ranges. Typically, Alloy A380.0, with a maximum magnesium concentration of 0.10%, is the version most commonly cast in North America, while versions containing 0.30% magnesium are more common in other parts of the world. However, there has been interest recently in North America in increasing the maximum magnesium concentration of 380 from 0.10% to 0.30%. In fact, the E380.0 specification was registered in early 2007, and this is the only designation that allows the magnesium concentration to vary from zero up to 0.3%. The current project was performed to compare the mechanical properties of two versions of 380, one containing approximately 0.1% magnesium and the second having a higher magnesium concentration of approximately 0.3%.
