The objective of this document is to provide a status report of a short project to evaluate the potential of using resonant inspection (RI) as a process control tool to monitor and control the quality of die castings in production environments. RI is an acoustic inspection technology used to detect the presence of defects in components by examining differences in resonant frequency, bandwidth and resonant amplitude compared to non-defective components. Typically the component is hit with an object (a hammer) and the resonant spectrum is examined using an oscilloscope- type instrument. The presence of defects will change the frequency response from the component.
