In 2006, the local council installed an 11m-high fountain in the boating lake at Newquay's Trenance Gardens to celebrate the gardens' centenary. As well as being a visual attraction, the fountain also had the practical benefits of helping to aerate the lake and to combat the formation of algae. But two drawbacks were soon discovered. First, the fountain was proving expensive to run and, second, passers-by were becoming drenched with spray whenever strong winds were blowing.
