Beyond the Training Range: Simulation in the defence industry

Model-based systems engineering simulations are playing a key role in the defence sector where innovative technologies need to go from concept to manufacture within a short amount of time. But the combination of an ageing workforce and the current skills shortage means training in simulation technologies is becoming ever more important. In today's defence industry, there is a need to balance the pressures of maintaining the technological edge for the warfighter against the constraints of affordability. In recent years, this has become exacerbated by the ageing workforce, with retirements resulting in an 'experience drain' from the industry. At the same time, macro trends from industry and technology alike are cascading into the military realm. The internet of things, network centric warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) technologies, the rise of autonomous unmanned systems and condition based maintenance programs, are now the subject of intense evaluation.
