摘要

Editors note: Asian soybean rust, a plant disease caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, has lowered yields and raised production costs in many parts of the world, including Asia, Australia, India, and Africa as well as South America. It can infect over 95species of plants, including soybeans, other cultivated legumes such as peas and beans, and wild hosts such as kudzu, which is widespread in the U.S. A new study by USDA's Economic Research Service says infestation in the U.S. is virtually assured by 2005, but that it will be manageable if steps are taken now to identify, isolate, and control it when it hits.
