Acute rectal bleeding from rectal varices can be challenging. There are aiso reports of portal venous decompression using transjugular intrahe-patic portosystemic shunts (TIPSS), but this procedure is associated with mortality and morbidity, particularly In elderly patients.5 Pharmacotherapy has a role for hypertensive colonopathy but remains unproven for anorectal varices.
