ASHOK LEYLAND LAUNCHES JAN BUS

Commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland Ltd. has launched the Jan Bus, what the company called the world's first fully flat-floor, front-engine bus with single-step entry and air suspension, at Kolkata in West Bengal state. Ashok Leyland, which is the flagship company of the Hinduja Group, handed over a fleet of 30 buses to the West Bengal government. The handover of the Jan Bus (which means "people's bus") to state transport minister Madan Mitra by the company also constituted the global launch of the vehicle. The West Bengal state government has placed order for a fleet of 449 Jan Buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN-NURM) scheme. Of the 449 buses to be delivered to the state government, 140 will be air-conditioned, the company said.
