While the Jeep was born during World War II as a combat vehicle for the U.S. armed forces, by the 1960s it had morphed into a "go anywhere civilian vehicle, Though the U.S. military no longer purchased Jeeps in any significant numbers, military forces of other nations used the vehicles for many more years, Most were produced under license by Hotchkiss in France, Mitsubishi in Japan and Mahindra in India. Now, Chrysler LLC is reviving its military tradition with a Jeep-based vehicle boasting serious combat potential. It plans to start building a new Jeep multipurpose vehicle early next year. The Jeep J8 will be available only in markets outside North America.
