ABB Onboard DC Grid allows variable engine speed; smaller electrical system footprint, weight. Offshore supply and support vessels, ferries, yachts, tug boats and other smaller ships often use electrical propulsion systems with low-voltage onboard circuits. In the traditional multiple-direct current (dc), connections are made to thrusters and propulsion drives from an alternating current (ac) circuit connected to diesel generator sets. This requires the use of drive transformers and main switchboards. This ac/dc conversion process can account for more than 80% of the electrical power consumption, so it's an obvious target for efficiency improvements that can reduce fuel consumption and related emissions.
