摘要

Electric propulsion has become the preferred solution for several ship types, and new application areas are being evaluated continuously. The shift in technology from direct diesel driven propulsion to all electric propulsion affects not only the propulsion itself, but gives the naval architects a flexibility which allow them to use new ideas for optimum design and layout of the vessel. As the propulsion becomes electric, the status of the electric power system changes from being a utility for bridge and navigation equipment, hotel load, etc. to become essential for the vessel's maneuverability and station keeping capability with high demands to availability and reliability of the power system. This report gives an overview of state-of-the art on electrical propulsion and its associated control systems. Recent achievements on components, systems and ship design concepts and the trends seen for future developments are presented. Operational aspects, reliability and availability of diesel electric propulsion are commented in the view of ship owners and classification bodies.
