The increase of fuel prices worldwide has made it more important than ever for manufacturers and operators to find ways of reducing the fuel consumption of their prime movers, Even though a fuel efficiency of 50% for a main engine is relatively high, the primary objective for a ship owner is still to lower the total fuel consumption and, thereby, to reduce the CO{sub}2 emissions of the vessel. This same principle is also true for any land-based electric power generation plant and valid for any reciprocating, as well as a gas turbine engine. To couple waste heat recovery boilers to an engine and use the resulting steam to drive a steam turbine is not a new idea. This is a common approach with gas turbines that have high exhaust temperature and the solution has also been used for diesel engines, despite their lower exhaust temperature. Following the trend of required higher overall ship efficiency since the first oil crisis in 1973, the efficiency of the main engines has increased and has led to a correspondingly lower exhaust gas temperature after the turbochargers.
