Ordos Basin, the second largest sedimentary basin located in central China with an area of 250,000 square kilometers, spreads over 5 provinces including Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Shanxi. As one of China's major energy resource bases, Ordos Basin contains abundant petroleum resources. Changqing oilfield located in Ordos Basin has long been the key exploration area of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). In recent years, along with the rising of control level and advancement of science and technology, both oil and gas productions have been growing rapidly. By the end of 2001, 41 oil-gas fields had been discovered in Changqing oilfield. The cumulative proved oil reserves is 1.0045 billion tons and proved gas reserves is 1.1831 trillion cubic meters. The annual oil production is 5.20 million tons, ranking the fifth in China, and annual gas production is 3.46 billion cubic meters, the second largest in China. It has 4 world-class large gasfields with proved gas reserves over 100 billion cubic meters and becomes the first large gas province with gas reserves over 1 trillion cubic meters, ranking among the 15 largest gas provinces in the world. Ansai oilfield, with reserves at 200 million tons level, is the first low permeability oilfield developed and Jingan oilfield, with reserves at 300 million tons level, is the largest low permeability oilfield in China. Now, PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company has 6 oil/gas production units with production capacity over 1 million tons of oil equivalent each, of which 4 units have the production capacity over 2 million tons of oil equivalent each.
