Type 2 diabetes and its complicationsconstitute a major worldwide publichealth problem. The prevalence oftype 2 diabetes is increasing exponentially,and it is estimated that more than 300 millionpeople will have diabetes by the year2025 (1). Type 2 diabetes is primarily alifestyle disorder, and, not surprisingly, thehighest prevalence rates are occurring indeveloping countries and in populationsthat are undergoing "westernization" ormodernization.
