A quick glance at Zeus' Virtual Energy Library shows us that the U.S. energy market is changing. Companies such as Cheniere Energy, Southern LNG, BG Group, Dominion, Sempra Energy and Gulf Coast LNG Export, a new company formed by Michael Smith, founder of Freeport LNG, are pursuing LNG-export opportunities. Just one of those companies, Cheniere, has received approval to commence exports from their Sabine Pass liquefaction project. However, the U.S. Department of Energy has said that it will not make a decision on future projects until it has weighed the pros and cons of sending U.S. gas abroad, Reuters reported Feb. 16, citing statements from energy secretary Steven Chu. "We're not going to do anything until we make a determination what the impact would be," Chu told lawmakers at a Senate energy committee hearing on the Obama administrations budget request. "There are substantial questions that have to be addressed before our country starts allowing significant natural gas exports," said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).
