Australia's parliament passed the Clean Energy Legislation (Carbon Tax Repeal) Bill 2014 on July 17, effectively removing the carbon pricing mechanism that the Clean Energy Act of 2011 established. The new bill was introduced on July 14, after several unsuccessful attempts in recent years, the most recent of which was defeated last November. According to the Australian Department of the Environment, the carbon tax was levied at A$25.40 (US$23.66) per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent. Facilities that emitted more than 25,000 tonnes annually were directly liable, as they were required to submit annual reports to the Clean Energy Regulator. Natural gas suppliers were also directly liable.
