Baltic countries, Finland looking to progress US$1.7B LNG import terminal

Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland- should soon agree on a site for a regional LNG terminal to avoid delaying EU aid for the project, Bloomberg reported, citing a statement by Estonian Economy Minister Juhan Parts. Consensus is needed on a final site before the project can receive aid through the Connecting Europe Facility, which is scheduled to be implemented from 2014-2020. A determination of a site could happen as soon as next month, Parts said. The countries plan to build the terminal as a way to reduce reliance on Russia's Gazprom for natural gas. In a November 2012 study, Estonia and Finland were found to be the best sites for the facility.
