For two generations of performance enthusiasts, that moniker was shorthand for a very special class of vehicle: powerful, fast, cheap and uniquely American. Today, the success of "retro" themed cars based on iconic brands like the VW Beetle and Austin-Rover Mini signalled the inevitability of similar vehicles from the domestic automakers; Ford and Chrysler both offer new generation "pony cars": the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger.
