摘要

For many years poisoning in pet birds caused by lead or zinc are a common problem in captive birds and a lot of cases have been reported. Heavy metal intoxications are mainly caused by lead from draperies or crafts or "new wires". Besides protection of the birds from those sources for prophylaxis, therapy is of great importance. Since EDTA is not available as a commercial drug any longer, a study in pigeons using DTPA in comparison to EDTA was performed. Results showed DTPA to have the most positive effects after IM administration of 35 mg DTPA/kg KM daily and lead concentration in blood was diminished rapidly over the following 6 days. Over the next 6 days an IM interval- therapy is possible followed by a period of PO administration of 70 mg DTPA/kg KM. In pigeons, there were no signs of undesired effects of the compound. These results have been interpolated for therapy of heavy metal intoxications in other species of pet birds (budgerigars, cockatiels, macaws, amazons, cockatoos, parakeets) with comparable effects.
