Migration of primary aromatic amines from rubber based commodity articles into food

6PPD is the only approved ozone protective additive based on phenylenediamine for rubber based commodity articles used in food applications at present. The antioxidant partly decomposes during the vulcanization and undergoes further reactions after migration in aqueous food simulants producing primary aromatic amines (PAA). Consequently permissibility and quality assurance tests on milking hoses, milking liners and pump stators which require ozone protection lead inevitably to increased and hygienically critical migration values. This is an earnest matter which may lead to rejection. The influence of the vulcanization conditions and the compound components on the formation of PAA was investigated by studying a series of rubber mixtures with variable composition and 6PPD dosage. The result was that the migration behaviour was substantially influenced by the polarity of the rubber, the surface activity of carbon black and by the proportion of plasticizer used. Ozone protection waxes are effective on the surface of the rubber article by forming a hydrophobic barrier against the PAA migration. Based on the presented results the amine migration can be significantly reduced by changing the composition of rubber articles which is in the interest of public health and consumer protection.
