The civil war and genocide in 1994 had terrible consequences for people and for the country's environment; there was a huge loss of trees which has led to degradation and erosion of arable soils. Now conditionsare gradually returning to normal, although farming in Rwanda was never easy. Trees have turned out to be an important part of the healing process. As a farmer in Bweyeye near the Burundi Mountains in south western Rwanda recently said: 'The erosion on my land is diminishing because I have planted trees'.
