Minimising maize silage spoilage

A general shortage of grass silage following an exceptionally dry summer has emphasised the importance of this season's maize crop. Producers aiming for maximum yields should be looking to harvest well-matured crops. Mature crops usually have relatively high dry matters and, according to Dr Richard Phipps of the Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR) at Reading, these are most at risk from aerobic spoilage during feedout. "Many farmers have experienced problems with high dry matter maize silage. The crop is difficult to consolidate and may suffer substantial aerobic losses, which can be as high as 15%, once the clamp is opened.
