The first farm I worked on, 40 years ago, though 700 acres, didn't know about pick-up hitches. You got really skilled at swinging the drawbar of the Major (reg MUD 316) over to one side, lifting the trailer with the chain wrapped around the link arms,and then swinging the drawbar back. If the chain slipped or the holes didn't line up you were messing around with the trailer ready to fall on your foot, so not really a method to earn Brownie points from the HSE. There's no wonder we all go for pick-up hitches today.
