I am writing with regard to the article 'Time to tackle causes of abortion' featured in Dairy Farmer in June. Whilst the article made some interesting and valid points there were a number of significant inaccuracies which have prompted me to write. The most important of these was in the description of the most common causes of infectious abortion in the UK. Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo does not cause one third of abortions in the UK. Leptospirosis accounted for less than 2% of total abortion diagnoses by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in 2005 (see ref).
