Jim runs 105ha, with the help of his wife Jesme and son John, in two units in central Scotland. They keep 110 Holstein Friesians, followers and beef stores. Jim is actively involved in grassland and breed societies and milk industry politics. It is now 24 hours since the most historical political event this century and I have to say, as a committed European farmer, I am more optimistic about our future with Tony Blair, than I was with the in-fighting Conservatives. Historically, farmers have been Conservative supporters, but it appears that allegiance sailed out of the window on May 1. A few months ago I predicted that the Conservative MPs in Scotland would have to get their act together as many relied on the rural vote, otherwise there would be none left after the election. I must admit I said it slightly little tongue in cheek, because they did not all rely on the country area votes, but now, as we all know, Scotland and Wales are both Conservative free.
