Vet raises doubts over Kiwi system

UK dairy farmers have been hearing about milk production on the other side of the world from Dr Sue Macky (above right), a New Zealand-based vet and dairy farmer. New Zealand dairy producers have been the envy of their British counterparts for takingthe majority of milk from low cost grassland systems, but the tables are turning Down Under, Kiwi dairy farmers are beginning to wake up and confess their systems have made little progress, if any, during the past 30 years, and are starting to offer complimentary rations in an attempt to boost margins. New Zealand vet, dairy producer and adviser to Keenan, Sue Macky, has been touring the UK trying to put the record straight to farmers that extended grassland systems are not all they are cracked up to be.
