Roger, with the help of his son David, runs 33ha and 100 Holstein Friesians at Brunslow Farm. A further 33ha a short distance away are managed on an annual basis. In the beginning there was Plan A. Plan A worked well, better than all expectations. I've told you about Plan A before, it involved drilling Italian ryegrass immediately the maize was removed last autumn, Because the ryegrass grew so well we were able to move to plan B. This was based on grazing the ryegrass for early bite which in turn meant that we were much later than usual turning onto our set stocked grazing area. Because we were later turning onto the grazing area there was obviously more grass than usual so we were able to fence off 3ha surplus to requirement and include it for mowing for first cut silage.
