Rachael Porter uncovers the thinking behind a service, launched early this year, which aims to help dairy farmers manage grassland more efficiency. It's easy to see that feeding a Blackstar daughter to yield just 6,000 litres is a missed opportunity,but it is much more difficult to convince farmers that the potential of much British grassland is being wasted. This is the task which the newly formed Grass Research and Advisory Service (GRAS) has set out to do, Co-ordinated by the British Society of Plant Breeders, GRAS aims to draw on the many years of grass breeding and management expertise from its member companies to help farmers increase profitability.
