Weatherford International Ltd. says it is aggressively reducing its cost structure in North America by closing facilities and laying off employees to save $340 million (U.S.) annually, having experienced a slow first quarter especially in Canada. Of the reductions -- savings of $250 million completed and another $90 million being implemented in the second quarter - $110 million relates to fixed costs, representing a 10% improvement in the company's fixed-cost structure in North America, Andrew Bec-nel, chief financial officer, told a first-quarter conference call.
