By using Indexes, you can combine the traits you want to see in future generations. Like a kid in a candy store who wants one of everything, dairy producers often want to make too many choices when it comes to genetic selection. With Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) scores available for all kinds of traits and characteristics — such as those shown at right — producers have a lot of choices when selecting sires. However, sire analysts and dairy geneticists agree that for best results, producersshould not make choices based on individual traits, but rather put them together in indexes.
