EU approves steviol glycosides as food additive

The EU Commission has authorized the use of steviol glycosides as food additive E 960 for the European market by formally adopting the EU Regulation 1131/2011 on 11 November 2011. Earlier the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) had established that steviol glycosides are safe for public consumption. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) evaluated the safety of steviol glycosides in a report published in March 2010. It establishedthe Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for steviol glycosides, expressed as steviol equivalents, of 4 mg/kg bodyweight and day. Steviol is the basic building block of steviol glycosides.
