One promising alternative to yield second-generation biofuels is the processing of biomass in conventional oil refineries. This alternative involves the co-feeding of biomass-derived feedstocks with a typical petroleum stream in standard refining units. This strategy has significant advantages in comparison with conventional processes of biofuel production. Petroleum refineries are already built and hence the use of the existing infrastructure for the production of biofuels requires little capital investment.3 Moreover, a wide range of biofuels might be obtained, not only in the range of gasoline and diesel, but also in the range of kerosene and fuel oil (see Figure 1).
