The method involves elaborating a stability setpoint (Cs), and calculating an internal combustion engine stability index (Is) based on the measurement of a rotation period of the engine. A stability difference equal to the difference between the stability setpoint and the stability index is calculated. The stability difference is processed by a regulator e.g. proportional-integral-derivative type control, which provides the correction (Cri) to be applied on a richness setpoint (Ri) of air/fuel mixture supplying the engine. An independent claim is also included for a regulating system for implementing a method for regulating stability of speed of an internal combustion engine in stabilized speed.
