Case 81: Is consulting a possible second career for you?

Often, engineers consider becoming consultants as a second career path. This was certainly true for this author, and it occurred early during his career. Equally important, his career turned out well, and he is working for large companies with all of the benefits they offer. Second chapter. Many young engineers consider consulting as the means to personal freedom and to selecting jobs that hold their interest. Company engineers watch the contracted consultants working at their facilities and believe that they (younger engineers) have the toolset to do the same tasks. These engineers probably could effectively find employment as consultants. However, there is considerably more to consulting than just performing the work. After retiring from a large company, this author has been consulting for over 11 years, and much of what you read in this monthly column is based on actual plant experience.
