In 1872, J.S. Norrie, Australia's first government analyst, reported on his examination of the seeds of Zamia (Macrozamia) spiralis (see Part 3 of this series, February 2010 issue, p. 20).t But Norrie was not the first colonial chemist to show an interest- in Australian plants - there were four phytochemical publications in the 1860s. Two of these were on essential oils from several species of Eucalyptus, another concerned Xanthorrhoea resin and the fourth was on the manufacture of paper from Australian plants.
