The first government analyst in colonial Australia was James Smith Norrie, appointed in 1844 on a fee-for-service basis - it was not an establishment position until 1883. Norrie arrived in Sydney in 1840 and set up a wholesale and retail druggist business at 170 Pitt Street, Sydney, where he also operated as an assayer of ores and minerals and as a photographer (Collins 2000, Guthrie 1904).
