The vaccine is highly effective in preventing persistent HPV infection, cervical, anal, vulvar and vaginal precancers and cancers and anogenital warts associated with the 4 HPV types targeted by the vaccine - HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18.2"5 A bivalent vaccine for HPV 16 and 18 was approved in October 2009 for the prevention of cervical cancers and precancers (MMWR). The bivalent vaccine is approved for females and the quadrivalent HPV vaccine is now approved for both females and males.
