I am more than delighted to see a new and revised edition of Roy Lancaster's Travels in China (Garden Art Press, 2008, pound 39.95), first published eighteen years ago. It came off the press as China attracted the world's spotlight-preparing for thisyear's Olympic Games and, less felicitously, because of the devastating Sichuan earthquake of 12 May, in which, according to a statement made on 31 July by the State Council Information Office in China, 69,207 people died and almost 1.5 million were made homeless.
